There’s no one in this world who doesn’t POOP – it’s a universal truth. And most of the people just flush it away without a second thought. However, what looks like one man’s trash becoming another man’s treasure, the non-profit firm, OpenBiome, to tell the truth sell your poop samples in order to create lifesaving fecal transplant treatments for people infected with Clostridium difficile, a bacteria which is highly resistant to antibiotics.

Infections of C. difficile cause severe diarrhea, hospitalizing 250,000 Americans each year and resulting in around 14,000 deaths. It occurs due to use of antibiotics for too long, which ties into what makes it exceptionally difficult to treat. The patient’s gut microbiota is completely destroyed, and conventional probiotics are not enough to replace them.

Sell Your PoopAn ideal treatment for C. difficile infections is a fecal transplant, and yup, it has traditionally been as awful as it sound. Doctors have banked on highly invasive nasogastric tubes (NG tubes) or colonoscopies to deposit donor fecal matter into the gut of their infected patients. The process sounds difficult, but is highly effective. A new procedure employs capsules of frozen fecal matter, which defrost in the body and release the contents in the small intestines. The success rates of the capsules is at par to traditional treatments, almost 90 percent.

selling poopSell your poop as OpenBiome’s job is to collect and screen stool samples, and transform them into ready-to-administer treatments for hospitals. OpenBiome pay donors who commit themselves to providing multiple samples per week.

However, OpenBiome prefers donors who live near their lab in Medford, Massachusetts. Candidates who fulfill the requirements for age, BMI, and health pre-screening questions are then invited to get blood and stool testing. After donations have been made for minimum of four times per week for 60 days, the donor is re-evaluated. After ensuring that the next round of blood and stool tests have come back clear, the previous samples are converted into capsules and delivered to patients across the country.

The current rate is $40 per donation, while those who come five days a week, are paid $50. If we calculate it comes to $250 per week, or $13,000 per year. OpenBiome keeps a policy of encouragement and rewards wherein donors who make the most donations, or provide the biggest sample, are given a prizes. Nonetheless, there’s no word on whether OpenBiome offers a fun sticker to show off your donation to friends and family, like the “Be nice to me, I gave blood today” badge bestowed by the Red Cross.
