Sugar should not be consumed in large quantities. Though most of us take care to see that we do not, we actually do. And this kind of sugar which we unknowingly have is termed as ‘hidden sugar’. It is present in yogurts, bread, canned foods, and soups and in many other eatables.

Graham MacGregor, a professor from Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine says that sugar is being constantly added to the food items and it is usually hidden. Hence people cannot make out the fact. The addition of sugar to the food items started right from the time when people gained the idea of obtaining sugar cheaply from sugarcane, corn and beet. He says that sugar has no nutritional value at all and is a leading cause for obesity all over the world.

Professor carried out some studies and it was revealed that a can of Coca Cola contained 9 teaspoons of sugar in it. Similar amounts of sugar were also reported to be found in eatables such as bread, ready meals, yogurt etc. A can of 300g Heinz Tomato Soup contains 4 teaspoons of sugar while Yeo Valley 0% Fat Vanilla Yogurt contains 5 teaspoons. A Mars bar contains 8 teaspoons of sugar while Starbucks caramel Frappuccino with whipped cream contains 11. The amount is very high.
