‘Long-distance’ seems to ring the death knell for a lot of relationships. Unfortunately, this tends to happen even before the couple have even tried it out! People part even before distance has separated them. But instead, it they had the courage to give it a shot, they’d emerge as stronger people in a better and happier relationship!

Asking why? Here 9 reasons that we found:

#1 A long distance relationship means you don’t need to look your best at all time. We usually put in a lot of effort into looking good for our partners, and sometimes you just don’t want to. This gives you that much needed timeout.

#2 Not having a 24 x 7 supportive partner means you need to start doing more thingson your own – so you end up a lot more self-sufficient and independent.

#3 Communicating doesn’t come easy to men – and even women tend to feel they can’t really talk much with their men. But the distance makes it essential for two people to talk and communicate. In the long run, both parties get much better at communicating with each other.

#4 A long distance relationship gives you time with yourself – this is essential in every relationship but doesn’t usually happen.

#5 Since distance separates you, taking the occasional holiday becomes more essential and justified. And a vacation is the best way to rediscover so many things about your partner. All these go into strengthening the bond between two individuals.

#6 Relationships often tend to be only about the physical aspect. And these ones usually do not survive in the long run. But being in a long distance relationship takes the physicality out of the equation. You get a chance to really get to know the other person and become friends!

#7 There is always Skype, chats, or phone calls. But both of you will definitely have different schedules, if not different time zones. And therefore, you become better at waiting, and giving the other one space. You are also better at understanding the constraints the other faces.

#8 Commitment and plans for the future are a given in long distance relationship. For such relationships to work completely there has to be 100% commitment from both parties. Any slip ups will eventually get discovered. And then if the relationship breaks, it’s usually for the best. On the other hand, the ones that will survive will usually be where a lot of elaborate future planning been done. Because when all you can do is talk, you can always discuss the future!

#9 And finally – if your relationship survives an extended period of long-distance time, it’s that much more likely to survive through thick and thin… And knowing that feel great!

So you see, long distance is one great way to find out of a relationship is right and whether it will survive in the long run. So, have you taken the ‘test’ yet?
