A rare genetic disorder makes a woman see 100 times more colors than any normal person could ever see. For instance, when people look at a buttercup, the only color appears apparently to any person is just yellow.

ANTICO-273.jpgHowever, one artist visualizes a complete set of other colours than just yellow around the flower’s edge, as she is declared a tetrachromat and who can observe 100 times more variants than the normal can.

Concetta Antico, who spends life in San Diego, California, has got included more receptors naturally in her eyes to contain and retain colourful light, making her to view – and paint – the world around her in a various ways to most others.

Original caption Retina CAny person in general can see view mostly one million colours, in comparison, tetrachromats have an extra cone class included in their eyes for colour vision that stupendously enhances their range up to a phenomenal 99 million with ease.

Optically speaking, cones are referred to as structures in the eye that are included to absorb certain wavelengths of light and transmit them to the brain.

Most of the individuals have three variants of cones, but tetrachromats like Ms Antico have four types.

Concetta AntiAlso, any normal person contains three types of cones, which are reverted to wavelengths of red, green and blue, and tetrachromats’ fourth types can defer.

It is because of that certain condition, which is regarded by mutations in the X chromosome, which result in people to visualize more or less colour, according to PopSci.

Fine Artist ConcettaSuch mutations result in men more apparently to be colour blind and result in women more likely to be tetrachromats if they contain mutations on either of the X chromosomes.

To ensure the maximum of her visual abilities to view more colours, Ms Antico paints bright, impressionistic images of animals and landscapes and also explains people to view the colours around them in a totally different way.

She explained: ‘Everyone has the potential to expand their ability to see colours the way I do, but our urban lifestyles and focus on technology is shutting it off.

Artist Concetta AntiHowever, it was only in 2012 that she has been diagnosed with the possession of the genotype for tetrachromacy and she has been referred to intensive study by the University of California Irvine.

Medical experts said that variations cropping up in colour perception are difficult to identify as they are minute and tests are not sophisticated enough for over three pigments – blue, red and green.

Based on Ms Antico’s genes, they think that her fourth cone absorbs wavelengths that are ‘reddish-orangey-yellow’ and are trying to explore whether this is how she sees things.
