So much of the social media shares these days consists of various GIFs. And believe it or not, most of these are usually created from YouTube videos. To do these most people resort to third party apps that can do so very easily. And if you have ever done it, you will know that there are many such tools created by developers. However, the latest is that YouTube is themselves trying to help these GIF makers!

In a way, they are also probably trying to gain a monopoly of sorts – by creating this experimental tool. The tool in question allows you to create GIFs from videos in YouTube, without having to resort to any outside tools!

But the tool is experimental yet…

That’s right. So far the tool is nothing but experimental. YouTube is taking its fledgling steps into the GIF market and so far the tool is only available for use on videos from the PBS Idea Channel. Plus, you can only create GIFs that are a maximum of 6 seconds long at the moment. But, if they have managed to get this far, it is likely that they will soon be able to implement the tool across YouTube and for longer durations too!

Now, moving on too…

How to use this tool?

Here is how to make these GIFs step wise. However, keep in mind that these steps will only apply to videos from the PBS Idea channel at the moment. Maybe with time, the option will be available for all other channels. But till then, you can always test it out there itself!

So, here goes…

Step 1. Open the video in question.

Step 2. Beneath the video you have three options – ‘Add to’; ‘Share’; and ‘More’.youtube gif creation tool

Step 3. Click on the ‘Share’ option.

Step 4. Immediately a drop down menu of sorts appears.

Step 5. In this new menu you normally would have these three options – ‘Share’; ‘Embed’; and ‘Email’.GIF tool

Step 6. But for the supported videos, as with the ones on the PBS Idea channel, there is a fourth option – ‘GIF’.

Step 7. Clicking on that gives you these options:

  •   An illustration of the video timeline with a blue frame in it. This blue frame is editable.
  •   A‘start at’ time option.
  •   An ‘end at’ time option
  •   A field where you can enter whatever text you want to appear at the top of the video.
  •   Another for text at the bottom of the videoGIF Creation Tool

Step 8. Now you can just drag the blue frame that appears on the video timeline to choose position.

Step 9. You can also drag the ends of the blue frame to shorten it or lengthen it – up to 6 seconds.GIF Creation

Step 10. If you want an overlay of text, you can also enter that in the provided boxes.

Step 11. The great thing is – there is a little preview box on the side which starts showing you the immediate results!YouTube Introduces

Step 12. Once you are happy with the results – Just click on the ‘Create GIF’ button – and you are done!YouTube Introduces New GIF Creation Tool

Step 13. Clicking on the button will provide you with an embed code as well as a direct link – and you can use whichever suits you.

Overall, YouTube has made the tool as easy to use as possible. And they have given you quite a few options as well. All that is wanted now is for the tool to become available across YouTube!
