Solar powered tentsYou love the outdoors and camping. You frequently go to out of the way places. Obviously you are all kitted out, Tent, sleeping bags, lamps, basic cooking equipment. However, some things there are that you don’t quite like. In lonely places, you find it hard to stay connected, as there may not be an easy way to keep your gadgets charged up. Sure you could lug around a generator, but you need wheels to carry it with you. Besides there’s only so much fuel you can carry. Also you hate to spoil the pristine silence of the surroundings with the rumbling, and pollute the place with fuel fumes. And then again, on days and nights when it is pouring outside and damp inside, you wish there was some way to keep the floor warm.

Now you can have all that. Solar powered tents have entered the market and they promise a lot. They all sport solar panels on top which can be used to charge battery packs which have enough capacity to charge all your gadgets and more. However, the best in our opinion is yet to come out.

The Orange Solar Tent a prototype of which was unveiled at the 2009 Glastonbury Music Festival works. Conceived by the telecom giant Orange, this tent is inspired by the new photo voltaics in development. Simply put these are fabrics which have solar threads and ordinary threads woven together to form flexible solar shells that would be adjustable to face the sun all day. The energy derived would then be used for four things, connectivity, heating, lighting, and charging. A pretty ambitious concept.

The design firm Kaleidoscope who worked with Orange on this concept had a not so simple goal. It was to provide attendees to the concert to have a way to keep tabs on their location, and to communicate with their friends, all through the tent.

AS you can see, the tent has no resemblance to any conventional tents. One of the most exciting ideas is the charging concept. There is a charging pouch, and instead of plugging in, people simply drop their devices into the pouch. This would contain a coil which would generate a magnetic field which would produce a charge that would charge the batteries.

A part of the solar energy captured could go towards providing radiant floor heating. As we said before, a boon in the wet countryside.

Haven’t you ever gotten lost in a large campsite? Bet you have had trouble finding your tent among the hundreds of tents. People wandering around looking for their temporary home is a common sight in such cases.

For this reason, the tent is going to be equipped with a “Glo-Location” technology, which will be accessed by the owner by sending an SMS or by using an RFID tag. The tent would glow prettily in response.

There also reports of the tent’s ability to broadcast a Wi-Fi signal. However, it is still unclear if this will be a booster for a central hub, or an independent Wi-Fi router.

Doubts may arise about the effectiveness of this design in inclement weather. We think that should not be such a problem. Conventional solar units seem to work in all kinds of weather, sunny or cloudy.

This particular tent seems still to be under development. Nevertheless, in our opinion, it will be a winner when it is available for the public. Can you picture yourself warm and cozy in your well-lit tent, still connected to the rest of the world while wild weather rages outside? Kinda nice, don’t you think?
