The graduate from the ‘Royal College of Art’, named Julian Melchiorri, has recently claimed to have created a wonderful leaf made from silk with facility of producing oxygen from it. This leaf can be thus a great help for the space travellers to gain some oxygen there and also can make the surrounding polluted air nicer and fresh to breathe in. The student had made this leaf with the assistance from the silk laboratory of the Tufts University.

Silk-LeafA certain protein matrix that is being extracted from the ‘silk and the chloroplast’ (it is an organelle with the help of which the plants and the algae can grow and execute photosynthesis in them) is the main raw material used for the leaf. This artificially created leaf can act just like a real naturally created leaf in the presence of proper water and sunlight conditions and produce oxygen from it.

This leaf has got a very light weight too. Also, this leaf can be used for illumination purposes at our homes as it can be made to produce lightning at times when needed.

Silk LeafAs well know, there had been several researches conducted and some are still going on in NASA to develop means of getting oxygen with which one can travel much longer distances in space and explore more. This leaf can be a great achievement in the job and can help explore much which was not done before. Also, this leaf can be a part of the ventilation mechanisms and the building facades to help in the generation of fresh oxygen in the area.
