“Why aren’t you smiling, baby? Smile!”

Ever walked past an absolute moron on the streets and got called at with these words? The feeling is a really irritating one! You wish you could go give them a resounding slap on their smirk faces. And telling them that it is the presence of people like them that keeps you from smiling!

But alas! The ways of the world are not as simple as that. And with the harassment of women by such uncultured hooligans on streets around the world increasing on a daily basis – it is time the women got back with their response!

This is Barbara and she’s 50.

Street harassmentStreet harassment is the starting point of sexual violation, even molestation. And statistics are pretty alarming right now – it is said that every 2 minutes, at least someone is being sexually violated in some part of America. There are countries in the world, where it’s worse! But coming back to ‘my smile’…

Why do I not smile?

There isn’t really any point talking back because you do not justify yourself to a barking dog. But just once and for all –on behalf of all women – here are 7 reasons why I, as a woman, don’t smile at you!

1. Because you are just harassing me! You don’t actually want me to smile!

2. Because I’m trying my best to ignore your intense male gaze – which has no right to objectify me!

3. Because why would I ever alter my internal emotional state for you? For someone else, maybe, but for you, my harasser – not even in my dreams!

4. Because I’m having a terrible day – and you are the worst part of it!

5. Because my life is about me – and you or what you want does not determine how I conduct myself!

6. Because if I could, I’d wipe that smile off your face with a well-aimed kick!

7. Because you are just an uncultured honor-less jerk, and I would never smile for you!

We’re just saying – from a woman’s perspective much of this is what would actually come to mind at that very instant. But then women aren’t like these harassers – and don’t usually speak their mind at the cost of others.

But maybe it’s time to break out of that!

In a recent survey, a group of women were asked what they’d like to say – much in the same vein as a few other such surveys. Other what survey’s you ask? Let’s explain.

Recently, there were quite a few campaigns that were run, where people were asked to write down their perspective on paper, board, and chalk board – or any such platform – and hold it up while their photo was taken. Something similar was done with a group of women citing this very situation – and some of the results are here for you to see:

And finally – this is Gwen. And she’s 16.

harassment of women

There really is a lot more where that came from. But I’m just trying to hold up a somewhat complete picture right now. All women are different. Some don’t care, some are bothered, some are tired – and some are ‘intimidated’.

And our real concern, it’s for that last lot. Street harassment – even if it is just about that ‘smile’, is a real problem – not just an innocuous little thing that society just brushes under the table. It has led to much worse – violation, sexual harassment, and in certain cases even rape. It is something that needs to stop – and not only because it is wrong. But also because it attacks the fundamental rights of a woman. So let’s take a pledge today: this needs to stop here and now!

And just spare a thought: at the end of the day, who loses the dignity? Is it the harassed, or is it really the harasser?
