At least 37 percent of pancreatic cancer could have been prevented by some lifestyle changes. Cancer Research UK is a charitable foundation dedicated to fight cancer.

Dr. Jeff Evans a clinician and scientist in Cancer Research UK’s Beatson Institute in Glasgow says that people can take steps to reduce the risk of developing pancreatic and other cancers by not smoking and controlling their weight especially if they tend to add it to the middle. He also says that reducing their intake of red meat and keeping physically active could also help. According to him, survival figures for this disease remain shockingly low, and this needs to be changed. He says there is an urgent need to tackle this disease by building an arsenal of more effective treatments, and developing ways to ensure early detection of this disease, so that it can be more effectively treated by surgery.

Most cases of pancreatic cancer is detected at an advanced stage, when there is little or nothing that medical science can do to combat it.

While launching this major push against pancreatic cancer, Cancer Research UK’s Director of Early Diagnosis Sarah Hiom said, “Cancer is a complex set of diseases.

“For some, lifestyle can play an important role, and is one aspect of the disease that we have some control over.

“Pancreatic cancer is a disease with poor outcomes and is less well understood, so it’s important that we talk about the things people can do to stack the odds in their favour and reduce their risk.”

That a proper lifestyle could reduce the chances of most forms of cancer is common knowledge. You could easily search the net to find out details. A proper lifestyle includes eating healthy foods and keeping physically active and maintaining a proper body weight. A healthy diet is a proper mix of proteins, carbohydrates and fiber, and to ensure that it is not lacking in the proper nutrients. That would exclude processed food and certain items that are known to have carcinogenic properties. Processed food contains too much fat and sugar and usually not enough fiber. They are also known to contain chemical preservatives which are also not good for the body in the long term. The most important no-no is, of course, smoking. It is known to increase the risk of cancer.

As far as pancreatic cancer is concerned, Cancer Research UK’s chief executive Dr. Harpal Kumar says that it is a rarely in the spotlight, and unlike other cancers, outcomes for it remain desperately poor. According to him Cancer Research UK has made research on this a priority and plans to spend more than double the amount they do now on it in the next few years.

Pancreatic cancer is a deadly disease, and not yet well researched. Yet it affects a large number of people every year and has a dreadfully poor survival rate. Proper means for early detection do not exist as yet. So adopt a healthy lifestyle and lead an active life to keep it away. You owe it to yourself!
