green coca colaThe Coca-Cola Company is coming out with a new variant of the classic cola drink, Coca-Cola Life. It was first released as pilot projects in Argentina and Chile last year. To be released in UK in September, this is the first new product to be launched since 2006, and it will have a distinctive green label or can.

Coca-Cola Life is a low calorie drink, a 330ml can of which contains 86 calories as compared to a regular coke which contains which contains 130 calories. It is also distinguished by a strikingly different green label, unlike anything they have used before.Differing from its zero calorie products, Diet Coke and Coke Zero, which contain artificial sweeteners, Coca-Cola Life is sweetened by a combination of stevia leaf extract and sugar. The stevia plant is a natural sweetener which is native to South America. Its extract can be up to 300 times sweeter than sugar. As far as sugar content is concerned, A 330 ml can of Coca-Cola Life contains 22.1 grams as compared to 35 grams in an equivalent can of regular Coca-Cola. Currently Coca-Cola also uses stevia leaf extract as sweeteners in Sprite and the Glaceau vitamin drink. Over 40% of the drinks sold by Coca-Cola are already sugar-free, and contain no calories. These include the two zero-calorie drinks Coca-Cola Zero and Diet Coke.

In a way it is better than Coca-Cola’s zero calorie products as the artificial sweeteners they contain can have harmful effects.Coca-Cola are signatories to the UK Government’s Responsibility Deal. Under the deal, food and drink manufacturers have pledged to promote healthier diet by making changes to their products, and Coca-Cola has promised to reduce the calorific content of their range of sparklingdrinks by 5 per cent by the end of 2014. Apart from beginning the use of stevia extract, Coca-Cola has also introduced the smaller 250 ml cans across its product range to that end. The company says that the new drink would help to meet the pledges they have made towards the government’s anti-obesity drive.

Some health groups, however, have criticized this move, saying that there is still sugar in the drink and the percentage is still quite high. A spokesman for a group called Action on Sugar says that the drink still has a high sugar content, and will still encourage people to have a sweet tooth. Others have said that there is no commitment by the company to stop selling full-sugar drinks or promoting them, or of “smart-swapping” to no calorie alternatives.green coke

According to James Quincy, President of Coca-Cola Europe, though, the company was an early signatory to the UK Government’s responsibility deal, and as they work with others across the society to deal with the public health challenge of obesity, in the UK and across Europe, they would continue to take actions to help people to balance their lifestyles.

So, a new Coca-Cola drink, one that represents a completely new initiative by the company, using lower sugar content, making it up with a healthy replacement. Do you like the idea? Would you be likely to change over to it? We cannot really agree with the health groups, as we feel it is a step in the right direction. If Coca-Cola Life were to be adopted widely as the drink of choice, there is definitely tohe possibility of lower sugar intake. It may not be quite enough, but it definitely paves the path for the company to subsequently release another drink with a lower proportion of sugar made up with stevia leaf. What do you think?
