Don’t wake the child. Sit with her, and prevent her from hurting herself. To remedy, reduce stress from her environment, develop a calming sleep routine, and don’t let the child stay up too late.You may need to seek medical help.

4.  Somnia

This is one of the parasomnias which are a set of disorders where sleeper makes abnormal movements while asleep. As the name implies, the sleeper with this disorder will indulge in activity while asleep and is unaware of it when awake.

Making the sleeping environment safe and sleeping alone is a good idea while the problem is being dealt with. In some cases medication specific to somnia may be necessary.

5. Narcolepsy

NarcolepsyNarcoleptics, fall asleep involuntarily during the day. Episodes may last for a few minutes and longer. Depending on what they are doing, this can be dangerous. For example if the person is driving.

It needs to be treated medically, and possibly with behavioral changes.

6. Sleep Paralysis

Sleep ParalysisThis is a form of Narcolepsy, where the sleeper is unable to move for a period of time while falling asleep or waking up.

7. Somnambulistic Eating

Somnambulistic EatingThis is a combination of parasomnias and eating disorder. People suffering from it usually wake up from sleep and go on eating binges, often unaware that it is happening. This results in indigestion and weight gain.

A combination of psychotherapy and medication is the usual remedy.

8. Exploding Head Syndrome

Exploding Head SyndromePossibly the most frightening of sleep disorders, it is not as dangerous as it sounds. The sufferer hears a loud noise in their heads while sleeping, such as an explosion or the loud clash of cymbals. It is a rare parasomnia.

Treatment consists of reducing stress, avoiding drugs or liquor, and restoring a regular sleep cycle. Medication may be necessary in severe cases.

9. Unexpected Nocturnal Death Syndrome

Unexpected Nocturnal Death SyndromeThe sleeper dies unexpectedly while asleep. It is prevalent among young adultsparticularly in south-east Asia. During an episode, the sleeper exhibitsirregular heart rhythm and ventricular fibrillation although there aren’tany overt heart conditions. Death occurs if the heart’s rhythm doesn’t go back to normal

There is very little to do in such cases as it is unexpected. Older Filipinos will tell you to wiggle the sleeper’s toes, to make the heart gain its normal rhythm.

10. Non-24-Hour Sleep–Wake Disorder

Non-24-Hour Sleep–Wake DisorderSufferers of this disorder feel that they are experiencing a continuous state of “jet lag”. They are actually suffering from a longer circadian cycle of 25 or 26 hours. It is very common among the blind, but others suffer from it too.

Remedy consists of re-synchronizing the body clock to the 24-hour cycle. There are various ways to do that, depending upon whether the sufferer is sighted or blind.
