honda jetFirst it was motorbikes. Then it was cars. In both fields Honda established a secure position in a relatively short time. Now it’s airplanes. Honda have just started production of their first ever airplane, the 5 seat HA420 Business Jet. The first one took off on its test flight on June 27.

The first Honda plane has many unique features, but what is most unusual is the long gestation period. The project started in 1997. This was solely possible because of the strong financial and engineering background of the company. About its unique features, it has a carbon-fiber fuselage, aluminum wings with over the wing mounted engines, natural laminar flow to lessen drag, and advanced cockpit with instrumentation that incorporates touchscreen technology that allows one pilot to operate the plane, although it has the controls for a second pilot.

All this gives the plane a max ceiling of 43,000 feet and a range of 1,180 nautical miles. In looks it is quite unusual, with a tapered nose a rather bulbous cockpit and the over the wing engines. However the bulbous cockpit design provides more head space and the unusual engine mounting allows for more cabin space and much less vibration and noise and improved fuel consumption. Most business jets have their engines mounted on their fuselages or on the tail which reduces cabin space and increases vibration inside the cabin. The over the wing configuration and the unusually smooth wing surfaces also improves laminar flow and reduces drag. All of these features point to the decades of research that has gone into the design of the aircraft.

Most other business jet start ups dating from the same period were forced by financial constraints to go into testing much earlier. In contrast, Honda’s first proof of concept Honda jet took to the air six years after the launch of the project, at which point of time it was still considered to be a research project. At that time the engines were considered to be inadequate, so a new engine was developed by General Electric and Honda, the HF120 turbofan which would power the production models. It was not until three years later that the production program for the aircraft was launched.honda-jetThis was quite different from Honda’s culture in the automotive field. Their cars go into production after a much shorter interval, and while in production, it goes through a continuous cycle of improvements which are merged to the production lines on a regular basis. This is just not possible in the aircraft manufacturing field. Here, the regulations and standards are more stringent, and changes cannot be introduced without rigorous testing and certification. For its aerospace program, Honda adopted a deliberate and patient style. The Chief designer and CEO of Honda Aircraft, MichimasaFujino spent more than ten years studying the over the wing engine concept before recommending it. There was years of calculations and wind tunnel testing to back up his recommendation. Current thinking at that time was that this would increase drag. However, it was found that the drag could be eliminated by placing the wings at an optimum position on the fuselage. This is just an example of the time and patience spent to perfect every detail.

The airplane has a price tag of $4.5 million, and Honda Aircraft has already received over 100 orders from businesses and affluent customers.Production of this aircraft continues steadily.

So a business jet from the automotive giant Honda, which is markedly different from all other business jets in the market. It has astonishing performance and advanced instrumentation.
